Mouth Tape for Snoring: Does It Really Work? (My 30-Day Test)

Jenny (Lil Miss Snoresy)10 min readUpdated May 5, 2026

Mouth tape sounded ridiculous to me until my husband bought a roll on a whim. Thirty nights later, I am sold (with caveats). Here is what really happened, who it works for, and which brands are worth the money.

    How mouth tape stops snoring

Snoring happens when relaxed throat tissue vibrates as air rushes past. Mouth breathing dries that tissue and makes the vibration louder. Forcing nose breathing humidifies the air, slows it down, and naturally pushes the tongue forward. The result: quieter airflow.

    My 30-day test results

    • Nights 1-3: Awkward. Felt claustrophobic. Took it off twice.
    • Nights 4-10: Dry mouth gone. Sleep app showed snoring time dropped from 38% to 21% of the night.
    • Nights 11-30: Habit. Husband stopped sleeping in the guest room. Snoring volume down about half.

    Brands I tested

    • Hostage Tape: Wide, comfortable, easy to remove. My favorite for facial-hair guys.
    • Dream Recovery: Breathable mesh and a center vent. Great if pure tape feels too sealed.
    • 3M Micropore (paper tape): Cheap, hypoallergenic, surprisingly effective. The budget winner.
    • SomniFix strips: Smaller "X" shape just over the lips. Less intimidating for beginners.

    Who should NOT mouth tape

    • People with untreated sleep apnea
    • Anyone with a stuffy nose, cold, or seasonal allergies that night
    • Heavy alcohol use before bed
    • People on sedatives or strong sleep aids
    • Children

Pair it with the right device

Most chronic snorers are multi-factor. The combo that finally worked for me was a fitted mouthpiece plus mouth tape plus side sleeping. Find your snoring type with our free quiz.

    Frequently Asked Questions

For mouth-breathing snorers, yes. A 2022 study in Healthcare found mouth taping reduced snoring intensity by about 47 percent in mild cases. It does nothing for nasal-collapse or tongue-base snoring.
